Bowen Therapy

Bowen can help ACTIVATE your body’s own HEALING abilities!

Bowen Therapy or Bowenwork is often called the ”homeopathy of bodywork.” It is a relatively new concept in therapeutic bodywork; however, it has been practiced since the 1950’s in Australia. Bowenwork is neither derived from nor similar to any other physical modality and is becoming more and more popular in the USA. It restores the body’s natural balance and provides relief from chronic pain by allowing the body to heal itself through gentle and relaxing moves made by the practitioner.

IMG_8978_1How does Bowen Therapy work in the body?

Bowen Therapy is a holistic, soft-tissue technique that relaxes and returns the body to a healing state. It allows the body to “reset” by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Each gentle and precise movement or touch is performed in a specific location: over tendons, muscles, nerves, and meridians. These Bowen “moves” send signals to the brain. The signals over-ride conscious movement and thought, directly stimulating the innate healing mechanisms of the body. This signal also stimulates the proprioceptors in the muscle tissue, creating a message that alerts the nervous system that the “emergency is over.” Once the body recognizes that it no longer needs to be stuck in the “fight or flight response,” it begins to heal. Bowen helps the body remember how to heal itself. It is an essential tool to facilitate whole-body healing. The specific objectives may vary from person to person, but there is always focus on relaxation and reduction of the stress response. See my brochure here.

How is Bowen different from traditional massage and bodywork?

Bowen is unique and distinguished by its effectiveness.  The process is very gentle and does not require inflicting pain or force to achieve results. It can bring permanent relief rapidly. There are three main things that make it different from massage.

  1. Bowen moves can be applied through clothing and in any situation.
  2. No lotions are oils involved
  3. There are wait times in between the moves or set of moves

Bowen is recognized and practiced by doctors, nurses, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, physical and occupational therapists, and massage therapists around the world.

A Bowen Therapy Session

Each Bowen session is individualized to meet one’s needs according to where the body is unbalanced. Sometimes a practitioner will focus on a specific area, but most often, the body is treated as a whole, so that all systems are affected to create balance. Treatment usually begins with some foundational work to open up the nerve pathways of the spine and relax the nervous system. A full-body response is almost always felt. Most importantly, Bowen Therapy is holistic, so this is not just a treatment of symptoms. Minimal moves are used so as not to overload the body. The point in receiving therapy is to heal, not to become dependent on the work. A Bowen session ranges from 15 – 60 minutes with the client resting comfortably on a massage table. The first two Bowen sessions are scheduled 7-10 days apart. Additional sessions are scheduled at least a week apart, as needed, with most conditions resolving within 3-8 sessions.

Everyone responds to Bowen according to what his or her body needs in order to heal. Often a person’s body begins to respond almost immediately. In most cases, after only a few, gentle moves over muscle and other soft tissue, healing can begin on the physical, chemical, emotional, mental and energetic levels. This process is not limited to the presenting physical symptom, but extends to the emotional, cognitive, and spiritual aspects of the individual client. Bowen practitioners routinely see hundreds of conditions respond positively to Bowen. In addition to the many musculoskeletal conditions that improve, problems relating to respiration, digestion, reproduction, vitality, energy and even mood often respond as well.

Why does Bowen Therapy succeed where other therapies do not?

Bowenwork is effective because, with a minimum of stress on the body, it focuses the innate healing capacity of the body exactly where it is needed to facilitate speedy recovery, pain relief and healing.

Why I choose to practice Bowen Therapy…

I found my passion in 2004, when I decided to make a change in my life, and pursue what felt natural to me, to help and heal others.  I signed up for Massage School and attended Ashmead College (now called Everest College) in 2005.

Thankfully, I was introduced to Bowen through my good friend, Kathleen Lassen.  Even though I was skeptical and didn’t expect to benefit from the work, a few sessions into it, I felt amazing results.  These results were not only physical changes in my body but emotional as well.  These results were so profound; I was determined to become a practitioner myself so other people could feel the benefits of Bowen as well.
